about

This online Dhurga Dictionary was developed in 2024 as part of the South East Coast People’s Digital Keeping Place Project, led by a Project Working Group of ten family representatives from Moruya to Eden. The project was developed in collaboration with SharingStories Foundation.

As part of the project, three online dictionaries were developed including Dhurga, Djirringanj, and Dhawa (Thaua), with local Custodians, First Nation Media Mentees, and school students.

The primary language resource used to develop this online Dhurga Dictionary was ‘The Dhurga Dictionary and Learner’s Grammar; A South-East Coast, NSW Aboriginal Language’ complied by Patricia Ellis, Kerry Boyenga, and Waine Donovan and published in 2020 by Aboriginal Studies Press, the publishing arm of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.

According to historical language archival sources collected between 1834 and 1902, the traditional Dhurga language was predominantly used south of Nowra to Narooma, inclusive of Braidwood and Araluen.

Language entries were entered by Patricia Ellis & Brooke Small.
